This is a must for keeping the roots from growing to the surface by delivering the water and nutrients where they belong for healthy trees and shrubs. The double-sided handle allows for evenly allied pressure to accommodate insertion. Obviously (see above comment from Jeff in Bastrop, Texas), you must gradually insert the rod, allowing the flowing water (the handy thumb controlled water valve is another plus) to soften the hardened soil (especially during the 2011 Texas drought) as you gently apply pressure. I'm advising everyone that care for trees to get one. My only complaint is that the hose connection should be metal, not plastic, because with time it becomes easily cross-treaded and can't hold pressure.

We used the root waterer and fertilizer during Texas droughts to keep our trees growing and healthy during the summer heat. Our trees grew to be the largest and healthiest on the block while our neighbor across the street replaced his red oaks three times over 3 years. The root feeder really does work.

              Comments about JOBES/ROSS Ross® Root Feeder (12044):

So far I have not tried to use fertilizer with this product, just for deep root watering for trees, shrubs and native perennials. It works fine.
At first I had trouble with the cap leaking. But if you screw it on very carefully, perhaps with multiple tries, the leaking should stop.
I like the fact that there are side holes on the bottom.
I would like to figure out a way to use compost tea to deep root feed with this thing, but without the water pressure of a hose, I can't see how it would work.

I use the Ross Root Feeders to water the roots of my trees. It puts the water exactly where it is needed most and conserves total water useage. The shutoff/flow control valve integrated into the feeder makes using the device very effective when watering trees of different sizes.

                Comments about JOBES/ROSS Ross® Root Feeder (12044):

The point of the wand is held in with one indentation, so the point tip was loose from the get go and leaaks around the tip if the water is on before it is pushed in the ground. Waiting till a time when removing it from the ground the tip won't be on the tube. Then I guess you will have to squeeze the tube end shut and drill holes in the sides of the tube, like the old ones, to get it to work again.

A great tool to use for deep watering trees and shrubs especially in Denver where we don't always have a lot of rainfall and sometimes have watering restrictions. This is a great way to deep water and not waste any water. Have used this product for 10 yrs. bought this one for my neighbor to use. Love it.

I was watering my newly planted tree with a hose and had to water every other day if not more. Now with the Ross Root Feeder, the water is reaching the roots instead of running off so I'm watering less. I would recommend this tool for established trees as well.

I use this feeder to fertilize my trees. It is so easy to use and much better than pouding spikes into the ground. The fertilizer will reach the roots much better and truly benefit the trees.

I have been recommending it to everyone in my neighborhood association. In our drought-stricken area, it's great to be able to put water right where it's needed, the roots, w/ no wasted water. I have used it on bushes, shrubs, plants.
