For most utility purposes I would use a larger, more powerful, construction-grade electric drill, the kind made to work hard all day long. However, the larger drill cannot hold drill bits any smaller than 1/8" diameter, but occasionally I need to drill a pilot hole smaller than 1/8" diameter, for a small screw, and that is where the Fiskars drill is right at home, perfect for small and lightweight work. And, being non-electric makes the Fiskars drill very portable and convenient. Let me add that my experience is only with drilling small holes in wood and particle board, and so I cannot comment about drilling in metal or other materials.

I bought one in '92 that was still going strong in Nov. '08. My step-father saw it and admired the great job it did, so I bought myself a new one and gave him my old one. Wrong thing to do! I used this one for the first time last night and the case separated slightly as I turned the handle - I feared it would pop apart. By the 4th drill bit change, the gear in the chuck slips and won't tighten. Sometimes a gear slips while I'm turning the handle. I deeply regret giving my old one away, but I'm glad I didn't give a new one as a Christmas gift!

Comments about Fiskars® Hand Drill (85116984):
On 12/6/07 I gave this product a 5-star review. I am unable to edit the original review, but would like to provide an update. The drill worked pretty well for a while and then started skipping. Eventually it stopped working entirely. I tore it apart and discovered that one of the gears is plastic, and about a third of the teeth had sheared all the way off. It did last about 5 years of light use, so I have to give it some credit. This review is one star to balance out the five stars that I gave it before. It is probably worth a two or three star review. It does work, but it probably won't for long and based on the reviews that followed mine, it's sheer luck that mine lasted as long as it did.

A great tool for drilling styrofoam or marshmellows, but if you want drill a hole in a peice of wood the cheap plastic gears strip in about 10 minutes.

Comments about Fiskars® Hand Drill (85116984):
Bought this for my grandson because the gears are covered and he can't get his fingers caught. After 30 minutes of use by a 6 year old, the plastic cover split along the seam. Exposed the gear mechanism. I had to put it back together with duct tape, and eventually returned it. Very disappointing, as this seems to be the only hand-drill available with the gear mechabpnism covered.

Comments about Fiskars® Hand Drill (85116984):
I bought this product to use on my boat when away from electrical power. Other reviews mentioned using it to drill into drywall and studs, so I expected that it could handle plywood. However, it could not. At the first sign of resistance from the drill bit, the plastic gears inside the handle skip and emit an awful grinding noise. I had to turn the chuck by hand to get the bit moving again. After about a dozen or so uses, the gears were worn down so much that I cannot even tighten the chuck on a bit. I got so frustrated that I almost threw it in the lake (but that would pollute the lake).
I can't believe Fiskars put its name on something this awful.

Comments about Fiskars® Hand Drill (85116984):
I was really surprised when I tried this bad-boy. The pistol design made it easy to maintain stability and it is perfect for drilling pilot holes for screws. Also if you have sharp drill bits, it goes through any wood like it's butter. I love this tool, and I'd buy it for anyone who likes portable tools. It's quiet, tiny, and safe. Tools don't get much better than this, and it's timelessness will prove to you that it's one of the best drill investments you can make.

This is great for delicate projects like cabinets, blinds, pictures, any where you need to "go easy". I have owned one for 15+ years and recommend it highly.

Comments about Fiskars® Hand Drill (85116984):
This thing is fantastic. It's cheap and works like a charm for drilling into drywall/studs, cabinets, delicate surfaces, etc. No worries about batteries running out or how far away an open outlet is. Wouldn't recommend it if you are going to be doing a lot of drilling at once, and it wouldn't work if you need stability (like using a Dremel or a screwdriving bit) since the hand crank is on the side.
