This was recommended by a friend to fill nail holes in my new baseboard. It worked great for that. I have always used DAP products in the past and have always had great results. This time I used it on a new buffet cabinet I was building. Used to it fill nail holes from attaching the face frame and to fill a small gap from trimming out the top. I used it on solid hard maple. Dried super quick, sanded down no problem. I primed and painted the entire cabinet and it turned out great.

Excited to try this product. Applied and waited for pink to change to white. Cool to see that. Then waited two more days before painting. When painting over the patches, they began peeling off. Very disappointed by the results. Went to hardware store to complain. They said I should have used a primer before painting, yet nowhere on the product instructions does it recommend using primer first. Messed up my paint job. Not looking forward to spending another weekend re-doing what I just did.

This thing doesn't harden at all, just falls apart

By Kevin

from San Bruno, CA

Comments about Dap Drydex Spackling (12337):

Bought the drywall patch kit. Applied the patch, spackled, waited a few hours for the pinkness to go away and dried overnight. Came back the next morning, sanded, noticed a lot of flakiness. Came back a day later and, while it was still intact, lightly touched it with my finger and it started to fall apart. There's no way it would accept paint or primer and the test of time, it is completely useless, flaky, loses its consistency, breaks apart. Now I have to buy a different joint compound and do it all again.

Comments about Dap Drydex Spackling (12337):

I bought a tub thinking this should work well. Turns out it just keeps peeling off.

Especially if you try to put more than one coat on. The moisture from the second coat causes it to bubble and ultimately gets into the first layer causing everything to get weakened. Weakened to the point the spackle just falls off... I tried it on different patch sizes, small 4x4" up to 8x8" with the same result. Any moisture from a second layer or paint just ruins the stuff.

I thought maybe it works best as a one application/one layer type of thing. Nope, I was wrong. Same results with just one layer and after applying paint. It seems like the moisture seeps into the spackle and causes it to peel and fall off.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, did it a third time and just wasted days trying to repair a couple holes.

DO NOT BUY. Followed directions clearly, watched multiple youtube videos, and ultimately ended up here, where I thought I should also say, buyer beware. Do not waste your time or money!!!

I applied this product as directed in 3 rooms of my newly rocked walls and wasted a ton of money not only on the spackle, but also the primer, paint, tools, and time!!!!!! The Benjerman Moore Paint on top of Zinsser 2 peeled off the walls like American Cheese from the Plastic. This product should be recalled at home terrible it is! I can Not believe that you can sell this!

paint peels right off the spackle. proper preparation, e.g., vacuuming and wiping off dust, was performed. the underside of the peeled paint had grit from the spackle. now i need to prep the wall again.

Comments about Dap Drydex Spackling (12337):

Not sure why this review of Spackle needs to know my cooking prowess?

This has a neeto factor changing colors when dry, but lets remember I sent 3 days spakling so when i put paint on the wall the Spackle would stay on the wall. Yes I did stir the heck out of it, I did prep the area, I did prime the wall, I have done this type of repairs for 20+ years. This is the worst product ever and it is clearly not the first review of its kind... so suprised that it is still on the shelves...

Comments about Dap Drydex Spackling (12337):

I STUPIDLY BOUGHT 3 LARGE TUBS OF THIS PRODUCT BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE DRYING INDICATOR WOULD BE HELPFUL. I MIXED IT THOROUGHLY, AND FOLLOWED ALL DIRECTIONS. I BEGAN TO APPLY IT TO SEVERAL DRYWALL PATCHES. THE PRODUCT WAS TOO THICK FOR PROPER APPLICATION (SEVERAL COATS OF 1/4" DEPTH AFTER EACH LAYER DRIED), AND WENT ON WITH SEVERAL AREAS THAT IMMEDIATELY PEELED OFF OF THE DRYWALL AND FELL TO THE FLOOR. IT IS TOO THICK TO ATTEMPT TO SMOOTH AFTER YOU HAVE SPREAD IT ON. IF YOU ATTEMPT TO FILL AND SMOOTH OUT HOLES LEFT BY COMPOUND THAT FELL OFF, YOU WILL END UP WITH A ROUGH, LUMPY SURFACE. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT TRYING TO WORK THIS PRODUCT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, I'M TALKING ABOUT APPLICATION AND TRYING TO DRAW IT SMOOTH ON RELATIVELY SMALL AREAS IN ABOUT 15 SECONDS. IRONICALLY, AFTER ALL THAT, IT TAKES FOREVER TO DRY HARD. ALSO IRONICALLY, DAP MAKES A SPACKLING COMPOUND CALLED " CRACKSHOT HIGH PERFORMANCE SPACKLING" THAT IS LIGHTER WEIGHT AND WORKABLE. IT ALSO DRIES MUCH FASTER. AFTER MY BAD EXPERIENCE WITH DRYDEX, I BOUGHT THE CRACKSHOT AND HAVE SEEN VERY GOOD RESULTS.

I tried this on a recommendation from a friend. I had to patch a 12" x 8" area of drywall. When this turns white it still seems to be soft and flaky even after 12 hours of drying time. I have one more coat to apply but I fear that I may have made a mistake selecting this product. I used in it some small holes in the walls a couple of days ago and it seems ok ... but for this larger area not so sure.

Bought a small jar for small holes and this worked fine. Decided to get larger tub for a bit larger job filing in around tape from builder on top of paint. Did not stick to clean wall with fresh paint. Also, will not dry and as I was sanding it, accidentally hit areas with corner of sanding block and put a large gouge in the repair made. It is white and has been drying for over 24 hours yet does not act like it is dry. Would've been much better off using another product. No good for anything larger than a small thumb tack hole.

I've used DryDex successfully without a hitch ~ EXCEPT that inside the lid can easily get clogged with the product making snapping it back on a real pain. This causes it to dry out and become useless. Why not make it a "screw on"?!!

Attempted to patch a crack in the ceiling. I've done this many times before in different locations using other products. Prepped the area, patched, dried, feathered & sanded smooth. Applied a primer that I've used may times before... Parts of the patch pulled away from the ceiling, other areas became rough like the primer dissolved the spackle. I removed most of the patch via scraping & sanding. Prepped again with course sandpaper and tried again. Same result. Completely removed the patch. Went to my 10 year old pail of drywall joint compound and patched, dried, feathered & sanded smooth. Applied the primer... no problem.

Comments about Dap Drydex Spackling (12337):

I have been using DryDex for all of my small to medium-size drywall repairs with satisfaction. The dry indicator is spot on for alerting readiness for sanding and painting/texturing. Both the spackling and the nail hole filler work great when used correctly and in knowledgeable hands. If you read bad reviews about the nail hole filler not dispensing quickly, it's because the tube is designed to dispense only enough to fill a NAIL HOLE at a time. This is a design function. I have used the nail hole filler to blend cracks from wall bowing and flexing - you have to knead the material in the tube first. Following the directions is key to success with any spackling as the manufacturer has a proprietary recipe that separates the material behavior from that of other brands. Use a little common sense in conjunction with the directions and you have yourself a great pre-mixed product that requires only a little stirring or kneading before use.

This spackle is great. I've been repainting a 5 bedroom house and a 32 oz tub of this stuff is plenty for this house. I've used it on bigger holes and patches, up to an inch, and it works great in layers. I love it so much. I wish it said if you could paint directly on it or if it needs primer. I've been priming it so far but I think I'm going to experiment with not priming it and see what happens.

I used this product for several uses. In the bathroom to repair where a towel bar was ripped out by my four year old, a hole where a door was opened too hard and the handle went through the wall, and screw holes from shelves that were removed. This product worked great for all of the purposes. I used a metal infused mesh for the larger holes and this product went on smoothly and evenly. It was definitely thick enough for the purpose, not at all runny. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is because I could not understand by the packaging if I could paint directly on it after I applied or if I had to use primer first. After sanding and wiping down, it still has a powder grit finish so I primed it first and it worked like a charm. Also, it goes on smooth and I have a orange peel wall. I took the curved edge of a paperclip and carved orange peel markings in the product after it dried and it matched the wall completely after paint. Very pleased with the results!

The color change works like a charm, but as a spackle... it doesn't fill gaps, nail holes (even thumb tack size), screw holes of any kind--the product is extremely thin, like pink ketchup. Every single hole will dimple as it dries forcing multiple coats. Since it is only good for extremely fine cracks, I cannot recommend this product, use CrackSHOT instead.
