About Hand Reel Mowers

A reel mower might be the perfect way to care for and cut your lawn, especially if it's less than half an acre big and relatively flat. If you have a large or uneven lawn, you might consider an electric mower or a gas mower, but for smaller yards without too many bumps and curves, a manual lawn mower makes a whole lot of sense.

First, consider the convenience: with no gas, oil, spark plugs or electrical systems to prime or check, you're reel lawn mower will always be ready to roll. Just push, and start seeing your wild yard straighten out right before your eyes. The reduced noise of a push reel mower means you can start mowing whenever it makes the most sense for you – without bothering the neighbors. Best of all, reel mowers don't emit pollutants. No gas means no emissions. Add in the extra savings from low operational and maintenance costs, and the motorless lawn mower makes both economic and environmental sense.

Reel mowers also tend to keep your grass healthier by cutting the blades, rather than tearing them like rotary gas and electric mowers. A rotary mower blade rotates horizontally and tears the grass blades below, which can create an uneven appearance and make grass more susceptible to browning and disease. A reel mower, on the other hand, uses a series of blades that rotate against a sharp edge, producing a clean, even cut that's generally even closer to the ground than rotary mowers can get. Because of the nature of the reel mower's design, they work best when the grass isn't too thick, tough or tall. A push reel mower isn't designed to mulch large sticks or tall weeds, but the grass clippings it leaves behind make great fertilizer for your lawn.

We offer hand reel mowers with 16 to 20 inch cutting widths to make it easy to find the right fit for your yard. You'll also want to consider the weight of the motorless lawn mower you choose, along with how much you can adjust the cutting height. These factors will determine the effort it will take to mow your lawn, and how often you have to do it.

Like all lawn mowers, the blade on your reel mower will need to be sharpened occasionally. Learn how to sharpen your blade or come in to your local Ace store for on-site blade sharpening services. To find the nearest Ace that offers blade sharpening, visit our store locator.
