I attached to a 2x4 first, and then mounted the 2x4 to the cross beams of my garage, to get it right where I wanted.

The only thing I can think of to make this perfect is to replace the mounting screws with self-drilling lag bolts. The screw heads will not hold up to very much torque at all. The rest of the kit is indeed all I hoped for.
