I have an acre yard with 18 mature oak trees of 80 or so feet in height. So yard maintenance is a year around thing. My Toro does the job - it clears all but the heaviest leaf fall with ease. In late October to Mid/late November it takes alot more effort but it is the same for my neighbors who wield their $700 cyclones. They get done in half the time but considering the tool this is a David and Goliath outcome. To reduce repetitive stress problems from vibrations it is best to wear a good glove if using for more than 30 minutes.

I slected the TORO 51609 based on reviews by Consumer Reports. I especially like the variable speed control. It is a little heavy but it has a very strong blower. My primary use of the unit is to clean up after mowing and edging my lawn. I tried to use the vacuum one winter on my oak leaves. Suction of the oak leaves was just fair. The bag had to be emptied every 5 to 10 minutes which is very time consuming. I no longer use the unit to blow/vacuum the leaves. I now hire someone to blow and bag the leaves. I am on my third 51609 unit. The motor failed after 4 years(no warranty). I replaced it in June 2013 with another 51609. The variable speed control which also turns off the unit failed. I had to unplug it to turn it off. Called customer service followed the instructions and sent the unit to the service center. I received a new unit. Customer support is excellent. I rated the unit overall as average given the issues I have had with the 51609.

A great device, with one very minor flaw

By MAL1952

from Knoxville, TN, USA

Pros

  • hood for garbage can
  • metal impeller
  • small sack for small cleanup

Cons

  • weak tab on suction tube

Best Uses

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

I bought this unit to replace a 25 year old unit that I had from another manufacturer. Based on the prior unit, I knew that this time I wanted a metal impeller (the old one was plastic). And I wanted a unit that had the hood that fits on a trash can. Finally, the way the tubes and hoses attach, they simply can not come loose and fall off -- which was problem as my old unit aged out. So all in all, this is a great unit. The one very minor flaw in the new Toro Ultra Blower Vac is the two-piece suction tube. I realize it comes in two pieces so that it can fit into a smaller shipping box. However, on the second use, the tab that holds the two pieces together broker off. So I have simply duct-taped the two pieces together, and will not take it apart until I am done with the leaves this fall. Between now and then, the unit does not get put away in the box.

    Better than my last Toro

    By Bob80

    from Barrington, IL 60010, USA

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

After 21 years my Toro Super Vac 51582 finally bit the dust. It got heavy usage including occasionally air drying my car after washing. Needless to say, I would only consider another Toro. Settled on the 51618 as the blower tube would slide inside a 3 inch downspout(wouldn't on the 51619) that is 10 feet long that I hold overhead with elbows on the open end to clean out 2nd story gutters. More powerful than my old one and just 1 lb heaver so I can manage sliding along the gutters. Less than a week old and it does a great job on clean up. Also less noise than previous one. Haven't tried vacuum yet, but don't use that much.

    Good product

    By Hornc

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

I have been very pleased with the way my Toro blower/vacuum has worked with the exception that it does struggle on large leaves. I frequently have to clear the tube of debris but on smaller to medium sizes leaves it works wonders. Even with that being said, I would definitely recommend this product.

    Updated designs

    By KenLF123

    from Hopatcong, NJ

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

I had an earlier version of this leaf vacuum. The new one has a metal impeller - great for acorns, I hope. The big tube now has a click together fastener. The older model just had the 2 pieces shove together. They tended to come apart. The new one has a variable speed power control. This is good in places where there is gravel, for example, or new grass seedlings. Sometimes less is more.

Super Product - Best in Class

    By glanderson21

    from Fairfax Station, VA, USA

    Pros

    • high speed blower
    • incredible reduction of bagged material
    • jiggling motion of blower attachment

    Cons

    • bag zipper fail - terrible flaw

    Best Uses

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

Incredible performance! Blower is outstanding in completely blowing leaves and even small nuts and berries off the grass and into the forest. I live next to (almost under) large trees at edge of parkland and have huge quantities of leaves and nuts and other debris. I also have flowering pear trees that drop thousands of little berries. This blower easily handles the job especially well due to its "jiggling" motion. No longer do I have "wrench" my arm and shoulder to swing the blower back and forth. This model does it for me. Powerful vacuum with tremendous reduction of leaf material into very small pieces for easy disposal. Only problem is severely deficient bag attachment which has zipper that fails after only 8-10 uses. I have already gone through 3 bags - zipper simply detaches rendering the bag unuseable. Is there a better replacement bag? Otherwise the blower/vac is an incredible product - best I have ever used (and I have used several).

Leaf blowing and premise cleanup is a breeze with this product. The only problem I had was with the vacuum. It would stop running occasionally. Maybe it was due to the area I was cleaning, which was in a stone/plant landscape garden.

        Pros

        • excellent blow and suction

        Cons

        • bag strap design

        Best Uses

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

I bought this product primarily for it's ability to mulch the leaves. As a blower it works very well, and as long as the leaves are reasonably dry it does an excellent job of macerating the leaves to very small pieces. However once wet the shredding ring will continue to work well but the debris will build up round it and in the suction tube, and care is then needed not to overload the motor, so check and clean the machine when mulching damp or wet material. Personally I find the debris collection bag awkward to carry when it starts to fill and think that a better strap design would be helpful

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

I bought this blower/vac in December 2012. and I really like it, but I have replaced the bag twice, and it just broke again. The weak link is the bag zipper. It fails about once a year and must be replaced. Toro really needs to put a strong metal zipper on the bag instead of the cheesy nylon zipper they use.

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

Machine used to blow and vacuum leaves from a small yard for two seasons. The first indication was erratic failure to shut off. Then the machine would not always run at full power. Now it is hard to find a setting where it will run at all. Find a spot where it runs and try to hold the position steady. And it turns out you can't buy a replacement part.

This is the 4th yr I've run the daylights out of this unit & it's still going strong! On the "Neg" reviews I'm c-ing the very same problem, "Switch" stops working shortly after using. The "Switch" prob is more than likely caused by operator error! How is this possible? U CANNOT use a cheap drop cord when using anything that's electric. A 16/3 cord will not cut it! U'll burn something up 4 sure. U've got 2 use a quality, 14/3 cord, min & even then if it's a 100ft cord U R using & ur going out in ur yard 100ft from the receptacle, then U need 2 use in conjunction with your 14/3 cord, a H-Duty 12/3 cord that U plug this cord in 2 the outlet 1st, THEN plug the 14/3 cord in 2 that cord. Just 2 B on the safe side, I always plug a HD 12/3 cord in 2 the outlet 1st, then plug 14/3 in 2 that 1. However, if U R going 2 try & go way beyond a 100ft (like I have 2 at times) I use 2, 12/3 cords instead of the combo 14/3 & 12/3. That way U won't burn the switch or the motor & U'll get many yrs of use!

Same symptons for switch like many on the internet: First, the blower will not turn completely off (keeps spinning)(12 uses) In the 2nd Year the speed varies up and down. Today, one has to turn the speed switch speed back and forth continuously to get 1/3 power.... Toro sells replacement parts for everything except the switch. Our previous Toro metal impellar lasted at least 10 yrs. The blower is totally useless with out the ability to replace a simple part, otherwise in great shape.

I bought my first home in 1997 and one of the first yard tools I needed was a leaf blower. The Toro model I purchased back then had all the necessary features. Recently it was much needed at my vacation home in Wisconsin so that is where it now resides. Now needing a new leaf blower here. I shopped Toro and this new Toro Ultra Blower Vac (Model 51619) has all of the features of my older one with several enhancements. The tubes connect together more easily and the blower velocity can now be dialed up from slow to fast, rather than just "low" and "high" as on the old model. Also, with the metal fan blade (versus the plastic one in the old blower) I'm confident that those leaf piles I vacuum up for bagging will be thoroughly mulched. Tar spot disease appeared in the trees last year so it is requested that we bag the leaves for weekly pickup. I had the opportunity to use this new leaf lower for the first time this week and I am totally satisfied!

I reinforced the slots made in the plastic body. I placed two metal pieces with a slot to hard the motor steady and prevent it from slipping down on the blade guard.

I see several comments on switch issues. I have had mine for years, lot of use one/two times/year to clear/mulch leaves from my previous driveway and area next to it. Mulches great, except when it sometimes sucks in too much. Once cleared, back in biz. However about the second year the switch no longer turned the unit off. It would have to be unplugged. Recently (2 years+) it was used to blow leaves off driveway and blow/mulch small back yard - again one or two uses per year. Today while blowing a very small backyard i smelled burning and saw smoke coming from the plug/power cord connection. I figure at this point it is toast. Unplugged the unit right away and also unplugged power cord from the socket. Would i buy it again? Perhaps, if there is guarantee that the issue is fixed. Would i bring it in for repair? Not likely - past warranty and again it is probsbly toast - wouldn't want to pay to repair it, if even repairable - probably cheaper to buy a new/different one.

The machine itself works fine - as advertised, but the bag for use with the vacuum function is very poor. Well not the bag but the zipper for emptying out the debris. It doesn't have proper teeth just piece of twisted plastic wire sewn into the backing cloth. On the second usage the plastic wire on mine started to become detached form the cloth and jammed the zip completely. I had to cut the zip open to get the leaves out rendering the bag useless. Fortunately I found someone who could remove this piece of cheap garbage and sew in a proper zip, it works fine now.

After I took off the vacuum tube so I could empty the leaf bag, I could not get it back together with the small grated piece that apparently chops the leaves. I used it without that piece and now have a bag half full of leaves (not chopped) and a yard that will have to be raked and bagged the old way.

Overall I think its pretty good. I think its much easier to remove the blower attachment than to remove the vacuum attachments. The bag on the other hand is bad., The zipper broke already.

The product has a good leaf blower, but the feature I am really using this year is the vacuum. The metal impeller mulches well, and allows bags to be stuffed. The blades did an excellent job chopping up pesky items like acorns & branches. It takes a little skill to know just how many leaves to attempt to suck up at one time, too much at once, you can may have to unclog the air flow. The suction balance is excellent though, leaves will get pulled off of the ground, but small stones and dirt are left behind. There is one strong flaw however, and that is the vacuum leaf collection bag. For some who aren't tall, when using the vacuum, once the leaf bag starts to fill it can drag on the ground. When I used it on my paved driveway, the bag frayed a hole after its second use. The zipper is an extreme weak point, and by 3rd use the zipper has started to pull away from the bag and also get stuck. A replacement bag is in my future, but Toro needs to reinforce the fabric & zipper.

I like the dial for the strength increasing the motor speed.

This is my second Toro blower. The first blower little after the warranty expired died. The switch burned out. The second blower same issue with the switch, at least the warranty did not expired yet.
