I have an acre yard with 18 mature oak trees of 80 or so feet in height. So yard maintenance is a year around thing. My Toro does the job - it clears all but the heaviest leaf fall with ease. In late October to Mid/late November it takes alot more effort but it is the same for my neighbors who wield their $700 cyclones. They get done in half the time but considering the tool this is a David and Goliath outcome. To reduce repetitive stress problems from vibrations it is best to wear a good glove if using for more than 30 minutes.

I slected the TORO 51609 based on reviews by Consumer Reports. I especially like the variable speed control. It is a little heavy but it has a very strong blower. My primary use of the unit is to clean up after mowing and edging my lawn. I tried to use the vacuum one winter on my oak leaves. Suction of the oak leaves was just fair. The bag had to be emptied every 5 to 10 minutes which is very time consuming. I no longer use the unit to blow/vacuum the leaves. I now hire someone to blow and bag the leaves. I am on my third 51609 unit. The motor failed after 4 years(no warranty). I replaced it in June 2013 with another 51609. The variable speed control which also turns off the unit failed. I had to unplug it to turn it off. Called customer service followed the instructions and sent the unit to the service center. I received a new unit. Customer support is excellent. I rated the unit overall as average given the issues I have had with the 51609.

Way too heavy compared to older model.

Cons

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

This has a lot of power but so heavy it won't be able to be lifted to blow out gutters. They changed the nozzle so you can't easily attach hoses as well. Poor engineering.

Purchased this to replace a worn out blower vac (another brand) because it offered the same features. The quality is significantly better and the performance is far superior. This is a very easy to use and has excellent power. I particularly like the variable blower speed.

        Good Electric Blower

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

Solid blower. Obviously not as powerful as gas, but that should be a given. Haven't tried to use it as a mulcher yet, so can't speak on that aspect. But it certainly blows and moves the leaves. Works great after the oak trees are done pollinating as well.

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

This is my second Toro blower-vac. The first one I used for 14 or so years and had no problems. However, with the new one there are 3 main problems. 1. the 2 smaller ends of the blower tube will not attach to the larger part. 2. the electrical cord does not stay in the slot provided. 3. the air intake tries to suck my pant leg in if I hold the blower too close. This never happened with the old one.

For any homeowner with an average sized yard this is the right tool for the job. Easily moved fairly large piles of leaves and grass with an attachment to increase airstream speed. And the then it reconfigures into a yard vacuum for picking up any errant leaves or grass left behind. I like it!

I purchased this product initially 8 yrs ago and wore out the power cord at the connection into the housing. I bought a new one and it was defective out of the box; took it back and the second became defective within a couple of days. Motor hitting on the chassis (same as the first defective unit). Took me three tries to get one that operates correctly. Design is great, components are good, quality stinks. You need to correct this issue then you will produce a great product.

I bought this blower vacuum to use mainly as a vacuum. I have a lot of trees in my back yard and it does an excellent job of vacuuming the leaves from our shrubs and ground cover. It grinds the leaves very nicely and they are easily disposed of from the collection bag. Very satisfied.

I saw good reviews on this blower, so took a chance. It works better than expected. It appears to perform better than some gas blowers neighbors have. The only reason I took a point off dependability is because I only had it for one year and it's too soon to tell.

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

So far, I have used my blower to blow lawn clippings and other garden debris and it has performed very well. I particularly like the variable speed control, which is far better than my previous one that only had two speed settings. Have not yet used it as a vacuum, but anticipate it will perform as well. Changing the accessories from blower to vacuum is a bit cumbersome, as it is to drag an electric cord behind you, which tends to tangle. But the relative light weight is less fatiguing than comparable gas or battery blowers.

Good blowing force and good dry pick up

                  By John02828

                  from Peoria, AZ

Comments about Toro® Power Sweep Electric Blower (51585):

The only draw back to this product is that dry pickup quality is reduced after several uses. The air flow volume and speed is restricted by fine dust plugging up the pickup bag. The bag requires washing after several uses to maintain high volume air flow for good pickup capabilities.

There's nothing to complain about with this blower/vac. It's powerful whether blowing or vacuuming. The speed control works well. One slight wish; a trigger in addition to the speed control would be nice for one-hand operation.

I have two large oaks, and it took me just a couple of hours to shred all the leaves and pack them into two contractor bags (without shedding, it used to be 10+ bags). Yes, it was a dusty job, but not a big problem with reasonable protection. Now, half a year later, those leaves turned into perfect mulch! I tried to use the blower too, but it caused way to much mess; having a medium size yard, it's easier for me to rake the leaves.

I cannot speak to dependability, but the Toro did a good job blowing leaves out, powerfully but not incredibly so. Did a good job as a vacuum and mulcher too, giving me 100% more space with the chopped leaves. Neighbor had a tip: do NOT leave the bag moist or with leaves in it. It will rot out. So I'll empty every time and hopefully have a dependable long term yard tool.

Surprised by the amount of power. Chops great. Blows great. Seems well built for heavy duty plastic. The only negative I can really think of is the power cord is very short - a foot or so - and occasionally comes part way out which causes it to arc and smoke. Tie the cords in a knot so this doesn't happen, and problem solved.

I had this blower for about a year and a half and it does a good job of blowing leaves, and cleaning cedar needles off my patio. It struggles to vacuum/mulch wet leaves, however. Something we have here a lot. Although I suspect any vacuum, except the big truck-mounted ones would have the same problem. What's really annoying is that about 6 months ago the power rheostat decided to stop shutting off completely, so to shut if off I have to unplug it. AND, I can't find a place to order a new rheostat, so there is no way to fix it.

I like the idea of the metal impeller. It chops up small twigs very well and significantly compacts a pile of leaves. Like many other reviewers I have problems with the variable speed control. When I turn it down, the machine will go to slow speed but not turn off. I have found that if I tap, or hit, the speed knob it may, or may not, turn off. Very intermittent and not trustworthy. Note to designers: Use a three, four or five position mechanical rotary SWITCH vs a variable control (potentiometer).

The connection/joint of the "bag" to plastic connector/adapter should be circular rather than rectangular. A circular connection would allow vastly improved sealing at the bag-adapter joint. The first system failure occurs at this joint resulting in disagreeable leakage of dust & chopped leaves in the direction of the operator at high velocity. Only solution is "duct tape" which is a pain - A rectangular connection should never got past the first design review!

I have had three of this model blower over about 8 years. Each one has failed, somewhere within the housing. The latest, purchased late 2014, made it about 14 mos. before coming apart inside. Since it's under warranty, I didn't open the housing and inspect it, but it sounds like it's chewing itself up, as if a shaft or something gave way. It has about 20 hours of runtime, in short intervals and at various speeds. They all have had good treatment, full amperage provided, and so forth. I am reluctant to recommend this model based upon my experience, but do so based upon the other reviews: I may have just had a lemon with two of the three I had.

I cannot get it to turn off except to unplug it. I have adjusted to that. Other than that it is a wonderful clean-up tool!

I bought this unit because of it's great accessories and powerful motor and was not let down. I was able to take care of my front and back yard which usually makes 20 bags of leaves. I ended up with only 8 bags this year. It shredded leaves and small sticks with ease. I would definitely recommend this blower.

                                Pros

                                • easy open bag to empty
                                • easy to change from blower to vac.

                                Cons

                                • non-removeable impellar
                                • no positive off

Overall I'm happy with UltraPlus Blower Vac I bought. Mostly I've used it to vacuum up leaves, and it grinds them to a nice size that I then use around my plants. Easy to assemble and use. The bag strap could use some work; a pad on top and the place where it secures into the plastic seems (it is fairly new, so no problems yet) like it won't last long. I wish the impeller was easy to remove, as there are times I just want to vacuum and not grind. It would be nice if the control knob had a positive "off"; wish it would 'click' into the off position rather than just be at the end of the dial. A grid cover for the vacuum tube would be nice also, so if you accidentally hit something big, it wouldn't have a chance to get lodged in the tube.

I purchased this product last fall to vacuum the leaves in my yard and it worked great. Just plugged it in and now it doesn't work. I read a few reviews about the switch having problems and it sound like I have a similar issue. Too bad I'll have to toss this in the garbage. DON'T PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT IF YOU WANT SOMETHING TO LAST MORE THAN ONE USE!

Purchased this vac approximately one year ago because reviews rated it high and it had a metal impeller. In General its a very good machine with utilitarian features. Used this quite frequently during the leaf season in Florida. However , I encountered two problems which appear to be too common with this machine. First the shoulder strap holding the bag during leave gathering broke and put an end to my collection. Toro could fix this problem quite simply by increasing the strength and amount of stitching at the point of connection. Secondly the power adjustment control will not shut off and I have to disconnect the power cord to stop the machine, A Problem. Several other review have noted this same problem. I gave this a two star rating and if these two problems were addressed and solved I would have given it 5 stars. I'm surprised that Toro hasn't read some of the reviews and addressed the problems.
