With the away feature turned on, the thing actuates the appliance when no audible sound is present.

I lived in a first floor apartment and used the security setting that turned a light on (near the windows) if there was noise. Great gadget and worth every penny.

I bought the first set for my In-laws 3 Christmas' ago.
They tap their canes to turn them on and off.
They like the convience and want yet another set but these things aren't very durable....should last more than six months for this price......
