This trap works well but if it is triggerd by a fast rat or mouse (one that is not actually in the jaws when they close) the lack of padding (the animal) will cause the hinge to shatter. This has happened to the last two that I bought.

I've caught four rats over the course of a year with these traps. Of the first two traps, one fell from a foot off the ground and broke, so we replaced it. The other one caught several rats, but then the bottom broke. The replacement for the first trap broke shortly thereafter.
So since I don't have a lot of rats, I decided to downsize and only keep one trap around. The current trap's catch is too stiff, so we've been feeding our rat for three nights running. We've clearly trained it to come to the bait, but now we need to train it to jump up and down on the pedal. My next purchase will be a T-Rex or those Victor pedal things. I've had it with Tomcats.

If you need help to control rats. This is much safer than other traps or the use of poison! Young children might think it is a toy, this trap looks so simple that a child may not see the danger of it.

With Bait Station, very effective & lethal. Few times animal was caught by a limb, still alive.
Also used in combination with wire-type spring traps in a "rat tunnel minefield" of sorts. Heartier rats escape wire-type easily, but not the Tomcats.
Only "con" is that it is not faster, so it can grab the smarter, quicker rats.

I used the traps in our pole barn. We had a problem with rats attracted to poultry feed, but I do not like to use poisons around the property. The Tomcat traps were easy to bait, easy to arm and disarm. If we had dometic animals in the area who might spring the traps, I easily covered the traps them with a bucket until the area was clear. The first trap captued and killed ten rats without us having to change the bait. We had peanut butter in the bait cup sprinkled with a little turkey crumble. Great product.
