I had four of these for 20 years in blue without a problem. So when it came time to replace them I ordered 4 of these black ones. All 4 black lids cracked in less than 18 months! My old lids (blue ones) are still good. They obviously changed the formula or construction of the lids. To add insult to injury I sent in for new lids, rubbermaid sent back coupons to supposedly replace the 4 cans, but only half of what I paid!

Elderly Homeowner. Needed wheeled bins to accommodate city yard waste collection requirements. Had to be this size and I needed to have the wheels to get it to the curb. The lid was cracked at 2 months and then two more cracks appeared even though the product was not mishandled in any way.

The other review appears to be referring to another model of Rubbermaid trash cans. I have owned 4 of these 34 gal, 39.75 in high trash cans for about 2 1/2 years, and I see no degradation of the lids. In fact, I expect the lids to last longer than the trash cans themselves. The best features are (1) the wide wheel spacing for improved stability and (2) the greater height than most smaller rolling cans, which allows me to stand up straight as I roll the cans out to the street. My only negative is the plastic wheels that make a lot of noise as I roll the cans to the street early in the morning or late at night.

The trash can outlasts the lids. Size is good for easy manuvering and 4 cans is about the right amout for a family of 4 if you have at least 2 trash pickups a week. The lids break too easily and no one needs to wheel around gallons of rain water without lids. also can't keep the local animals out without lids. Replacement lids are not available from Rubber Maid
