I was a bit skeptical about purchasing a "Heat Mate" brand heater, but then I realized it was a Sengoku...a reputable brand. I had been looking for a heater that would not use electricity. The heater itself was easy to setup, fill, and begin using. I like the removable fuel tank so you can take it out to the garage and fill it. The built-in handles on the sides make it easy to carry (when off, of course). I was also impressed by the manual (yes I read it!). The manual had the obligatory plethora of safety warnings, but it also had a complete parts list with mfr. part numbers. That's important to me so I can get any part easily enough if something goes wrong. The radiant heat is nice. It starts warming up the floor in front of the unit and the cat seems to realy enjoy it. I have been running it off and on for the past week. It looks like it needs a small adjustment because the flame on one side is too high (yellow) while the other side is about right. It's not enough to make me give a negative review. Things like this happen and I would have to adjust it at some time anyway. [...]

First, this heater is well constructed, works well, and the fuel lasts long. It does however produce fumes and odors that personally give me a headache even when used in a well ventilated garage with a 10-inch exterior exhaust fan. I used K-1 kerosene and noticed only a very minor improvement after the recommended burn-in period - I certainly wouldn't want to use it in my house unless it was an emergency. The heat output is only a little better than I get in the same space from a 1500W electric space heater which was a very big disappointment because it did not adequately heat my 320 ft3 garage located in the DFW area this winter. (It was only able to raise the initial 45 deg F that it was at, to 48 def F after running for six hours. My garage is well insulated with an insulated overhead door but it does have 48 ft2 of single pane windows and a typical amount of air leakage around the overhead door). I did not find that the top got hot like suggested, however the safety grill gets very hot and should not be used around small children or pets that may bump into it or touch it.
The operating manual is usable but poorly written and has problems such as referring to items that are not in the manual like the wick adjuster (which has to be removed for seasonal storage but is not directly identified in figures or text) and references items by multiple names which is confusing. Figures are placed within the manual without reference, in an adhoc manner, and often out of context.
I would highly recommend downloading and thoroughly reviewing the manual before purchasing this heater. There's no way my wife could perform the normal maintenance needed for this item - I would not recommend it to anyone unless they had the skills necessary to take it apart and service it as it states in the user manual (a comparable skill set would be to repair a lawn mower engine or replace the brakes on your car.) I was also disappointed that you have to tear the heater down to the wick replacement level just to put it away for the season (see page 11 of the manual) which took me over half an hour the first time I did it and will probably take that long next year if I ever decide to use it again. The heater must also be periodically taken apart to clean the wick according to the manual - I did not perform this as often as the manual stated since I found the wick cleaner than expected the first time I took it apart. Maintenance was not very well thought out on this design - that left front wing nut on the burner assembly can be a problem.

I just started useing this heater one day ago and so far i'm very happy with it. IT gives off more than enough heat for this small apartment. I run it for a few hours than have to shut it down as it gets too hot in here and i don't want to run out of oxygen in this small air tight apartment. I owned a heater like this over 10 years ago and was very happy with it, got rid of it to make more room. Bought the new one after huricane sandy as a heat source back up in case the electric goes out. Make sure you read all of the safety instructions. I never feel totally safe with a kerosene heater but i do follow the safety instructions and yes i cracked the cellar door open just slightly to let some fresh air (oxygen) into the apartment. Another thing as stated in the instructions, burn only fresh k-1 kerosene and burn off your heater as needed out doors of course.

Puts out a lot of heat in a short amount of time. The downside is, you need to store kerosene to be prepared for an emergency, and kerosene degrades and doesn't keep for long. Also, it should not be left unattended with kids or pets around.

Comments about Heat Mate® 10,000 BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater (HMN-110):
I have had my heater since 2/2010, see review. I use it when needed and found that the easy re-fill method for this heater is perfect for a me, 65 with arthritis in both hands. When the temp is 62 out it is cold for us in Key West, FL. I place my heater in the hall, open the bi-fold door to the furance and put the blower on with the furance off. In minutes my place is HOT. All that warm air from the heater is pulled through out the house and makes all the rooms warm and comfy. I turn the blower off, close the bi-fold door and wait a few minutes before using the off switch on my heater. I have never had any smell from the heater. My door to the outside is sometimes left open a inch or so while the heater is cooling down. For 2 years I have never paid Keys Energy a dime for electric heat. Before buying this heater I could sometimes have a higher electric bill in winter than in summer.

Comments about Heat Mate® 10,000 BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater (HMN-110):
We have a smaller home and supplemented our heat pump with a 23,000 btu kerosene heater last year. It was much too large for our 1300 square feet and dominated our living space. We could not use it when the grandbabies were present.
The Heat Mate® 10,000 BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater (HMN-110) is the perfect size for our space. It can be safely used at one end of our combination living/dining/kitchen area instead of needing to be placed in the center of the space.
We are getting excellent fuel economy with this heater! As another reviewer wrote, it SIPS kerosene.
If you have a small space to heat, this heater is worth a look. We are very pleased with its design and fuel economy.

Comments about Heat Mate® 10,000 BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater (HMN-110):
This heater has gotten great reviews in the past. I just bought mine in Novemeber 2011. It was easy to move and the tank is light weight. But the wick would not adjust correctly. Therefore it would not burn right. When I returned it to the store they said there was a defective part in the wick adjustment and that they had a whole shipment of replacement parts for every heater in the store.......so ask before you purchse if they can just go ahead and replace the part. Otherwise I would say the heater would be good for a average sized room. But the fuel level is nearly impossible to see.

Comments about Heat Mate® 10,000 BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater (HMN-110):
I am extremely pleased with this heater. I Had aprehensions about buying a square type Kerosene heater because most give off a noticable odor. This one only gives off some an odor when lighting and cooling down just like the big round convection type. Other than that it has no noticable odor to it; just as the round types dont. I needed a smaller type heater that was directional and this one fits what I needed perfectly. I would definitly recommend this heater to anyone who wants backup heat but doesn't need a heater as large as the round types. Plus considering it consumes less than half the amount of Kerosene per hour than the round types; since it produces less heat; you don't need as much kerosene for a given length of time.

Comments about Heat Mate® 10,000 BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater (HMN-110):
I should have downloaded the Manual and read it. my fault. I didn't understand that you can't control the heat level except by turning it off or opening a window, which sort of defeats the purpose in a bedroom at night(with CO and low oxegen sensors in the room). The heater seems like it would be fine in a large room during the day to monitor and turn the thing on & off when it got too hot / cold. I must say that Ace was really good about taking it back. I had not used it. Repackaged it with all original materials

I used a similar radiant kero heater many years ago that I was very satisfied with. Now living in an old log cabin with an inefficient propane central heating system, I have been looking for alternative measures.
It's a small cabin, and the heater in the living room does a great job at keeping it warm and toasty. I use Aladdin kero lamps in the other rooms to add additional warmth.
The taller heating unit in this heater means greater efficiency with almost no kero odor. Very satisfied.

Comments about Heat Mate® 10,000 BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater (HMN-110):
Years ago I had a similar stove but it always had a bad odor. But I loved the fact that you could pull the tank out and carry it out to the garage to fill rather than carrying the whole stove. When I was reading about this stove one reader said that it had a larger combustion chamber and because of that it did not emit an odor. So, I took a chance on it. It works great. There is really no odor emitted from my stove while it is running. I keep it in front of the fire place and move it back into the firebox and open the flu when I light and extinguish it - which minimizes those odors getting into the house. This stove will not heat your entire house but does a great job for what it is disigned to do. And you will get 15-16 hours on a full tank. My only fault with this product is the fuel gauge. I don't know whether mine is defective or what but no matter how hard I try I can't seem to read the fuel level. I like the stove so much that really doesn't bother me enough to take it back.

I use kerosene heaters all the time. Changing the wick is easy on all of them I own. If you can not change the wick you should take it to someone who knows how to do it! It took me 15 minutes to replace the wick in the newest HMM 110. Easy very simple to do so. The heater does a wonderful job.SO far this is the best heater I have and has the least amount of fumes. You also need to use the correct kerosene and make sure that it is good where you are buying it from! Contaminated K1 will smell bad and ruin the wick! Proper K1 is clear! No color to it no matter what people tell you It has to be clear! If it is pink or red looking it will smell bad and clog the wick. #2 fuel or diesel fuel is pink and will not work ! If the K1 is contaminated with #2 fuel or diesel it will look pink or red. This happens when the storage tank is filled off the truck and the hose is not purged. I hope this helps and you find it to read.

For information from a Kerosene Heater Expert refer to Miles Stair's Wick Shops web site. This heater is a recommended heater. Yes it does put off fumes, when you light it and when you extinguish it. if good proper installation is practiced then good performance will occur.the wick MUST be installed properly to manufacturers specifications ..these heaters always work when proper operation is followed.I used a Kerosun for 20 years in a workshop with no problems..YES they smell..YES they use a lot of energy..but if proper ventilation is practiced the heater (regardless of make) will do its job correctly and safely -the key is the Heat chamber-which always works best with a BLUE flame about 1 inch above the top of the glass chamber -too much gives off odor..too little will hinder performance-always read the owners manual which is one reason most people make the mistake -NEVER go to sleep with one of these in a room-always use LARGE amounts of fresh air -from several vented sources-i e open windows about 1 inch or door cracks at same opening..when properly used these heaters perform greatly thank you

Yes! Matt, Butler IN, is right on. I read then did a dry run with manual in hand. Manual is easy to understand & follow. Fantastic parts list. Let the wick get SATURATED, use CLEAN kerosene and a LEVEL surface. I had a perfect result first time used with no lingering oder/fumes. Heated my 2 story, 1008 SQ. FT. all tile floors, town home on LOW wick setting. Easy to turn on/off. Wick maintenance section is important. Manual is clear on room ventilation. We had wick on low, 2 windows, opposites, on each floor open about a inch and had 16hr run time for full tank. Yes! It does get cold in the Keyz. Not only does it do what it says, it does it well.

don't use these kinds of heaters inside your living areas.
I bought one of these because most all reviews said they do not put off odors.
well, they do. within the first 15min of use I had a headache and my heart rate was increasing.
it says to leave windows open...what good is a heater if you have to leave windows open all over the house?
the only place these kinds of heaters should be used is in a workshop/garage and ONLY where you will get a lot of fresh air.
what a waste of money. I gave it to a neighbor and he gave it to goodwill because he said it smells too much.
