Put two pills 3' from the edge around 3:00pm. By 5:00pm it had melted a 2-3' section down past the gutter. This has basically solved our ice dam issue as we will use the pills to melt gaps every 5 feet. So our dam is no longer trapping water.
I am not sure if this product differs from other ice dam solutions as it is relatively expensive but it works, and that counts!

This product works. But if you have huge ice dams... don't expect a miracle to happen and poof... your ice is gone overnight. This product will indeed "help" get the snow and ice to melt and start draining. Worth every penny for around $20.00. Use a roof rake to get most of the snow off, then toss the ice pucks up on the roof. You might need to pick up another bucket or two as well. I had a puck fall on my driveway(4 inches off packed snow and ice..) and over time melted right to the the gravel of my driveway. Speed up the melting with these salt pucks. I had some " milky, cloudy " looking icicles hang off my roof as opposed to clear icicles. This was due to the salt from the salt puck getting the snow and ice to melt. So yes, they do work.

I used one box and returned the other two. I can't speak to 1 or 2 inches of ice, but if you have a "real" ice dam, this aint' going to do it. Get a roof rake and clear the snow - that's the best solution to keep the water from making it's way into your house.
P.S. these tablets look and smell just like the ones you put in your pool. I can't see how they are safe for the roof, metal, and plants in the ground in the spring. We'll see in a few months what happens.

I got this product at my local ACE. I was having alot of snow and ice build up on the back of my house. I tossed around 10 tablet up and tried to keep them kinda close so it would knock out my ice problem in that area. Well 3 days have gone by and the tablets are still up there and soo is the ice. They seemed to do nothing at all. I even put one of these on the ground to test an icy spot. NOTHING!! DO not waste your money. I would not even give this a 1 star
