Essential Garden Hand Tools

For beginners and seasoned gardeners alike, Ace stocks all the garden tools you’ll need to properly maintain your garden. Handheld garden tools include cutters, spades, forks, long handle hoes, tillers, drains, and much more. Learn more about our robust selection of garden tools below.

Garden Hoes

Gardening hoes are traditionally used for stirring up soil in garden beds and weeding out unwanted growth and debris. Most hoe garden tools have long handles allowing you to stand upright instead of stooping to reduce back strain and pain. Handles are made from materials such as fiberglass, plastic, aluminum, steel, polymer, rubber, plastic, and all different types of wood.

You can choose garden hoes with different shaped heads, too. Blade heads are constructed from materials such as aluminum, carbon and forged steel, metal, poly, and stainless steel. Standard U-shaped hoe heads help with general soil prep and maneuvering closer to tree trunks and thick shrub stems, while pointed hoe heads do a better job of targeting the root of a weed. They make weeding your garden and fixing problem spots on your lawn much easier than pulling weeds and debris out by hand – saving you time and body aches. Both handles and blade heads come in a variety of lengths and widths.

Garden Tillers and Hand Cultivators

A hand garden tiller, with or without a foot bar, is another type of gardening tool that most gardeners can use to easily break and cut soil. They have long handles made of steel or wood with a variety of differently shaped heads. Tiller heads can have a mattock, which is a broad blade, on one end with a pick or an axe on the other, or as typically seen, they can have tines.

Opt for a hand cultivator tool when you need to mix soil that’s already been broken up with a tiller or other equipment. These make great lawn/garden hand tools for blending fertilizer or compost to your tilled soil as part of your preparation for growing plants.

Garden Forks

Forks, commonly known as pitch forks, are another mainstay of garden tools. There are several types of garden forks available, such as spading, bedding, compost and manure forks. Garden forks have long handles, usually made of wood or steel, handles of varying lengths, heads of varying widths, and have anywhere from three to more tines.
