How to Create a Farmhouse Kitchen

What You'll Need:

Get started by giving the cabinets a good cleaning with Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner & Degreaser. Spray both the cabinets and the frames, let it soak in for a few seconds to do its work, then wipe it off.

If you need to drill new holes for your updated cabinet hardware, do it before you take down the doors to paint them. Decide where you want to put the handles and then determine where you need to drill using a tape measure, or you can make things a little easier with a Measure Pro installation kit, which will help you with the layout and keep everything consistent.

Next, remove the cabinet doors. Keep the hinges and screws inside their corresponding cabinets so they don't get misplaced.

Once the doors are removed, prime them with oil-based Zinsser^® Cover Stain^® primer. Start with the backs, using a brush to get into all the nooks and crannies. Give them an hour to dry, then flip them over and do the fronts. Be careful to apply the primer as smoothly as possible. While the fronts dry, go ahead and prime the cabinet frames.

When the primer is dry, use your brush to paint the doors and frames with Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines™ Trim & Cabinetry Interior Paint in Shiplap MAG010. It goes on easily, and it's great for interior woodwork, doors and trim. Paint both sides of each door, making sure it goes on evenly, then apply a second coat once the first is dry.

While the doors dry, paint the frames. This can be tricky because it's a smaller area full of inside and outside corners. Be mindful of drip marks or areas where the paint goes on too heavy and make sure to even it all out with the brush. The frames will take two coats as well.

Once everything is painted and dry, rehang the cabinet doors. Before you put the handles on, do a final inspection and touch up any flaws.

For the walls, use Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines™ Interior Paint in Earl Gray MAG055, a contrasting color, to really make your new look pop. Start by taping the cabinets once they're dry, then cut the walls with a brush and roll the rest, applying two coats.
