About This Store
Founded in 1924 by Sagness Girouard Sr., Girouard's General Store began as a small country store serving sulphur plant workers catching the 7:05 train. Built on trust and community, it offered credit sales until Dow Chemical's arrival in 1940 brought growth and a shift to cash. Through hard times-including the sulphur plant's closure-the Girouard Family adapted, expanding into hardware, and home goods. After World War II, sons Bobby and Sagness Jr. carried on the legacy, serving local families, shrimpers, and shipyard workers along the Brazos River. For more than a century, Girouard's has thrived by keeping the personal touch-knowing our customers, greeting newcomers like friends, and always offering a little of everything. Today, we proudly honor our heritage while striving to be, as our founder said, "the best general store in Texas."
